Dr. Jodi Cooley is a Professor of Physics at Queen's University and Executive Director of SNOLAB, Canada's underground physics laboratory. She holds affiliations with the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy. Prior to her role at SNOLAB, she was a Professor at Southern Methodist University (SMU) from 2009 to 2022. Her research focuses on dark matter detection using cryogenic detectors, particularly with the SuperCDMS collaboration. She earned her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Bachelor's from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with postdoctoral work at MIT and Stanford University.
Dr. Cooley's research interests include dark matter particle physics, cryogenic detector technology, and cosmology. She has pioneered methods to distinguish dark matter interactions from background noise using advanced detectors. Her work has led to significant contributions to the field, including advancements in nuclear recoil measurements and low-energy event analysis.
Her awards include the Klopsteg Memorial Lecture Award (2019) for science communication and Fellowships from the AAAS (2018) and APS (2022). She has mentored numerous students and researchers, including Josephine Kimbrough and Mike Litke. Dr. Cooley leads SNOLAB's operations, fostering international collaborations to advance particle astrophysics and neutrino research.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes inspiring students through the excitement of physics and fostering critical thinking. She has contributed to curricula at SMU and Queen's, integrating research insights into education.
