Professor Jochen Lauterbach holds the SmartState Endowed Chair for Strategic Approaches to the Generation of Electricity at the University of South Carolina's College of Engineering and Computing. He leads research in heterogeneous catalysis, nanoparticle synthesis, and sustainable energy technologies. His work focuses on addressing environmental challenges through catalyst development for hydrogen generation and emissions reduction.
Education includes a Dr. rer. nat. from Free University of Berlin (1994) and Diploma in Technical Physics from University of Bayreuth (1992). He completed postdoctoral research at UC Santa Barbara (1994-1996).
Research interests center on catalyst design for sustainable energy applications, including CO2 capture, mercury removal, and fuel cell technology. Publications emphasize catalyst discovery, reaction engineering, and computational approaches to materials design.
Significant awards include the Wellcome Trust Fellowship (2004), Speciality Research Medal (2014), and Journal of Comparative Pathology Medal (2018). Leads multiple research consortia including the DEFEND program focused on cleaner electricity generation.
