Maohong Fan is the Carrell Endowed Chair and SER Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wyoming. His research focuses on chemical looping, catalysis, and materials synthesis for clean energy generation, environmental protection, and CO2 utilization.

Dr. Fan's work spans CO2 capture and conversion, rare earth extraction, nanotechnology applications, and fossil/renewable resource valorization. He has secured funding from NSF, DOE, EPA, and industrial partners like Siemens and Caterpillar. His research integrates experimental and computational methods to develop functional materials such as ionic liquids, organic frameworks, and magnetic catalysts.
Recent publications highlight advancements in CO2 photoreduction, electrocatalytic nitrate removal, and biomass-derived quantum dots. His team explores catalytic mechanisms, reaction kinetics, and life cycle assessments of energy and material production processes.
