Dr. Jocelyn Smith is an Assistant Professor in Field Crop Entomology at the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus, affiliated with the School of Environmental Sciences and Department of Plant Agriculture. She holds an adjunct position in the Department of Plant Agriculture and collaborates with organizations like the Canadian Corn Pest Coalition, NSERC, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. (2017), M.Sc. (2006), and B.Sc. (2001) from the University of Guelph.
Her research focuses on integrated pest management (IPM) and resistance management for transgenic crops and insecticides, particularly in corn, soybean, and cereal agroecosystems. Key projects include resistance monitoring in European corn borer (ECB), biological control of corn rootworm, and mitigating Cry1F resistance in Lepidopteran pests. She manages an insect rearing facility and collaborates internationally on resistance mitigation strategies.
Recent scientific awards include the UGFA Unit 2 Award (2023) and Mitacs Elevate Fellowship (2019). She actively mentors graduate students in entomology, molecular biology, and population genetics, emphasizing experimental design, data analysis, and industry engagement. Research partnerships span government agencies, industry leaders, and international coalitions.
Her work addresses pest injury quantification, yield protection, and sustainable practices while investigating pest species distribution and mycotoxin interactions. She leads projects on wireworm species identification and trap lure development for pest control.
