Erin W Hodgson is a Professor and Extension Entomologist at Iowa State University (ISU), specializing in field crop insects. She holds an adjunct faculty position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is affiliated with the ANR Crops Team and Sustainable Agriculture interdepartmental programs. Her research focuses on integrated pest management (IPM), particularly improving corn and soybean production in the Midwest through sustainable practices. She actively communicates research-based recommendations via social media (Twitter, podcasts) and extension resources. Erin earned her B.S. in Biology and Botany (1998) and M.S. in Entomology (2001) from North Dakota State University, followed by a Ph.D. in Entomology (2005) from the University of Minnesota, studying soybean aphid. Before ISU, she worked at Utah State University (2006–2009).
Her work emphasizes IPM strategies to enhance agricultural profitability and environmental stewardship. Key research areas include pest population dynamics, insecticide resistance (e.g., soybean aphid), and biological control. She leads initiatives like the Midwest USA Suction Trap Network and corn rootworm monitoring programs. Erin’s extension efforts bridge academic research with practical farmer applications, including pest scouting guidelines and efficacy evaluations for pesticides.
Her recent publications (2022–2025) highlight innovations in pest monitoring, resistance management, and remote sensing for crop stress detection. Notable projects include soybean gall midge biology, pyrethroid resistance mechanisms in aphids, and aerobiological sampling techniques. She advocates for pollinator-friendly practices and addresses emerging threats like invasive species.
