David Kerns is a Professor and Extension Entomologist at Texas A&M University's Department of Entomology. He serves as the Statewide IPM Coordinator and Associate Department Head, overseeing 6 Extension Specialists, 5 Program Specialists, and 10 IPM Agents. His research focuses on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for cotton, corn, sorghum, and soybean, with an emphasis on Bt and insecticide resistance in pests like Helicoverpa zea and Spodoptera frugiperda. Kerns has led over $6.3M in research/Extension funding, published 37 refereed articles, and presented at 61 conferences. He coordinates IPM programs across Texas, promoting sustainable practices and stakeholder collaboration.
- Education: B.S. in Entomology from Texas A&M University, M.S. from Oklahoma State University, and Ph.D. from Auburn University.
- Expertise: IPM development, pest resistance management, and agricultural entomology.
Research trends include analyzing Bt resistance mechanisms, evaluating novel toxins (e.g., Vip3C proteins), and optimizing pest control through crop rotation and biological agents. His work bridges lab studies and field applications, addressing real-world challenges like aphid infestations and virus spread in cotton.
Grant-funded projects emphasize stakeholder-driven directives, including pest surveillance networks and IPM training programs. He leads the Extension Entomology Program, ensuring science-based solutions reach farmers and ag-industry partners. His administrative role involves fostering collaboration between researchers, Extension agents, and policymakers to enhance agricultural sustainability.
