Dr. Erin Hodgson is a Professor and Extension Entomologist in the Department of Entomology at Iowa State University. She leads the ANR Crops Team and specializes in integrated pest management (IPM) for field crops like corn and soybean. Her work emphasizes improving crop production through IPM tactics to protect yields and enhance profitability. Key focuses include soybean aphid and soybean gall midge management, insecticide efficacy evaluations, and emerging pest surveillance.
Education:
- B.S. Biology & Botany, North Dakota State University (1998)
- M.S. Entomology, North Dakota State University (2001)
- Ph.D. Entomology, University of Minnesota (2005)
Research interests span pest biology, pesticide resistance, and sustainable pest control strategies. She collaborates on projects like the Midwest suction trap network for lepidopteran pests and evaluates cover crop BMPs to reduce pest pressure. Her recent work highlights challenges in managing Bt-resistant corn rootworm and pyrethroid-resistant soybean aphids.
Scientific contributions include advancing remote sensing for pest detection and refining IPM protocols using satellite data. She also advocates for pollinator-friendly practices amid pesticide use.
Grants and extension efforts emphasize farmer education through efficacy trials and decision-making frameworks. Her lab coordinates regional pest monitoring networks and develops tools for early pest detection.
