Dr. Joao Souza serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences within Montana State University's College of Agriculture. His research and teaching focus on sustainable soil nutrient management to enhance agricultural productivity and environmental stewardship. Contact: joao.souza@montana.edu (Leon Johnson Hall 812).
- B.S. in Agriculture, University of Sao Paulo (2015)
- M.S. in Plant and Soil Sciences, Oklahoma State University (2018)
- Ph.D. in Soil Science, Oklahoma State University (2021)
His research program centers on optimizing nutrient cycling and management practices to increase crop yields while reducing agriculture's ecological footprint. Specific investigations include soil acidification dynamics, organic matter transformations, and spatial/temporal variability in nutrient requirements. This work develops site-specific techniques that balance producer profitability with ecosystem protection through precision agricultural approaches.
Recent publications (2021-2023) demonstrate consistent focus on winter wheat systems under no-till management, with key contributions in soil acidity stratification, nitrogen stress recovery, biochar-amended soil testing, and canopy-based yield prediction. These studies bridge fundamental soil science with practical farm applications across multiple agronomic journals.
Dr. Souza maintains active research funding through three major grants focusing on Montana organic vegetable production, pulse crop phosphorus management, and regional expansion of the STAR program. His collaborative work with the Montana Department of Agriculture and Ohio State University supports field research on sustainable nutrient management practices.
While no formal lab name is specified, his research group conducts field and laboratory investigations into soil-plant nutrient interactions, with particular emphasis on translating scientific findings into practical management recommendations for regional producers.
