Joao F. Gomes is the Howard Butcher III Professor of Finance and Professor of Economics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he has been a faculty member since 1997. He currently serves as Senior Vice Dean of Research, Centers, and Academic Initiatives and is also a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

Professor Gomes specializes in the intersection of macroeconomics and finance, focusing on corporate investment and financing decisions, the effects of monetary policy on firms, and linkages between firm leverage, investment, and asset pricing. His work often employs dynamic quantitative models to analyze macroeconomic fluctuations with financial frictions.
His research has shown how financial institutions' franchise value influences risky lending cycles and how corporate debt maturity shapes responses to inflation. He has also contributed to understanding distressed stocks' pricing anomalies and the role of policy functions in structural investment models.
