Joanne Wolfe, MD MPH is the MGB Chair of Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women's Hospital, with a specialization in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She is affiliated with Harvard Medical School where she holds a professorial rank, and her clinical practice focuses on care for children with serious illness across the lifespan from infants to young adults.
Dr. Wolfe received her MD from Harvard Medical School, completed her residency at Boston Children's Hospital, and pursued fellowship training at Children's Hospital Boston/Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Dr. Wolfe's research program is dedicated to improving wellbeing for seriously ill pediatric patients and their families. Her team focuses on identifying and measuring developmentally appropriate outcomes, then developing and evaluating interventions to improve these outcomes across the illness trajectory from perinatal through young adulthood. Key areas of investigation include specialty palliative care interventions for children with advanced cancer and neurological impairment experiencing recurrent pain.
Her recent research highlights trends in pediatric palliative care, with a growing emphasis on addressing health disparities, economic hardship among families, and developing innovative tools for advance care planning. She leads several major research initiatives including the PediQUEST Response trial, which examines early palliative care interventions for children with advanced cancer. Her program also investigates decision-making processes, symptom management, and bereavement support for families.
