Professor Joanne Wallis is a leading academic in International Security and Pacific Studies at the University of Adelaide's School of Social Sciences. She directs the Security in the Pacific Islands program at the Stretton Institute for Public Policy and is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Her work focuses on regional security dynamics, statecraft, and maritime cooperation in the Pacific Islands.
Wallis holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has held positions at the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne. Her career bridges academia and policy, with extensive contributions to defense strategy, peacebuilding, and international relations.
Her research interests include Pacific geopolitics, maritime security, and the operational dynamics of international alliances like ANZUS. She leads major projects funded by the Defence Science and Technology Group and the Australian Research Council, analyzing security architectures and strategic partnerships in the region.
Wallis is Editor of the Australian Journal of International Affairs and contributes to global policy dialogues through roles at UNESCO and AP4D. Her recent publications address the Blue Pacific narrative, China's influence, and the evolving Indo-Pacific security landscape.
Her grants include a Defence Strategic Policy Grant on Pacific maritime security and an ARC Discovery Project on the Australia-New Zealand alliance. She advises governments and participates in parliamentary consultations, bridging academic research with policy impact.
