Associate Professor Joanne Shaw is a researcher in psycho-oncology and health communication at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Science. Her work focuses on psychological interventions for cancer patients and families, communication skills training for healthcare professionals, and evaluating evidence-based psycho-oncology interventions. She employs both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Current research explores models, quality, and costs of psycho-oncology interventions. She has led projects such as a nurse-led intervention for glioma carers and investigations into moral distress in oncology professionals. Her grants include the Nepean Blue Mountains LHD Bereavement Model adaptation and stakeholder evaluations of bereavement care frameworks.
Professor Shaw has published widely in journals like Neuro-Oncology Practice and Archives of Public Health. She chairs the International Psycho-oncology Society (IPOS) Research Committee and has contributed to media discussions on topics like scalp-cooling treatments for chemotherapy patients.
