Professor Joanne Protheroe is a Professor of General Practice at Keele University's School of Medicine, leading the Academic Primary Care team and the Health Literacy UK Group. She holds roles as Director of General Practice Education and Director of Clinical Academic Training. Her research focuses on health literacy, socioeconomic disparities in healthcare, and interventions to improve patient self-management, particularly in disadvantaged populations. She advises NHS England on health literacy and has influenced policy through her work, including demonstrating that 43-61% of working-age English adults have poor health literacy.
Key research interests include the intersection of health literacy with chronic disease management, musculoskeletal pain, and primary care innovation. Notable contributions include developing tools like the patient priorities tool and interventions targeting pre-school children's health literacy. Recent articles highlight her work on pandemic impacts on medical student career choices, barriers to diabetes self-management in deprived communities, and shared decision-making in osteoporosis treatment.
Her leadership includes chairing Health Literacy UK (800+ members) and collaborating on national initiatives such as the STarT MSK program for musculoskeletal care. Current projects include community pharmacist-driven health literacy improvements and policy-focused studies through the iFraP program. Professor Protheroe actively engages in policy advocacy, including House of Commons briefings and media appearances to elevate health literacy awareness.
