Dr. Joanne Parsons is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Manitoba. She serves as the chair of the MSc Rehabilitation Sciences program and is based at the Bannatyne Campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her research is centered on gendered socio-cultural and physical environments in sports and their impact on injury risk and experiences among girls and women.

Dr. Parsons earned her PhD in Applied Health Sciences, MSc in Kinesiology, and Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation in Physical Therapy—all from the University of Manitoba. Her clinical background in orthopedic physical therapy, including experience with sports teams at local, national, and international levels, strongly informs her applied research.
Her research interests include:
- Gendered sport environments and injury risk
- Sports injury prevention, particularly ACL injuries
- Resistance training across diverse populations
- Orthopedic physical therapy
- Health equity in rehabilitation
Dr. Parsons co-founded the Environments Designed for Gender Equity (EDGE) in Sport & Physical Activity Lab and is an investigator at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM). Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the 2024 Leonore Saunders Mentorship Award and the CIHR-IMHA Inclusive Research Excellence Prize. She has been featured in major media outlets such as the Guardian, NBC Today Digital, and Science Friday.

Her leadership in the EDGE Lab fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to promote gender equity in sport and physical activity.
