Professor Joanne Murphy is a Professor of Inclusive Leadership in the Department of Management at Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on leadership, organizational change, and development in volatile and conflict-affected environments. She has conducted extensive work with government, non-profits, and security organizations to enhance leadership capacity and manage systemic change.

Joanne Murphy's research delves into how leadership processes foster collective action and enable system-wide transformation, particularly in contexts of conflict and political volatility. Her work spans policing, public management, and peacebuilding, with in-depth case studies from Northern Ireland, Kosovo, and the Basque region. She examines how managers in public, private, and non-profit sectors engage with ethno-political violence and its legacy.
Her recent publications explore themes such as place leadership in post-Brexit Northern Ireland, liminality in conflict resolution, and the role of diplomatic leadership in peace processes. Her articles appear in journals like Leadership, Urban Studies, and Regional Studies, Regional Science, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement across political science, urban studies, and organizational behavior.
She is the author of Management and War: How Organisations Navigate Conflict and Build Peace and Management in Conflict and Transition: the Organisational Dimensions of Building Peace. She is currently working on a new book, A Duty of Hope: The Anglo-Irish Division and the Work of Peace, which investigates the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs' peacebuilding efforts.
