Dr. Joanne McCrea, DVM, cMAV, IVCA certified, has served as a faculty member in the Veterinary Medicine Program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks since 2021. She teaches a broad range of courses including Animal Welfare, Food Animal Production and Food Safety, Theriogenology, Foundations of Veterinary Medicine I–IV, and Clinical Sciences I–II, as well as Wellbeing Within the Veterinary Profession.
Education:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine – University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine
- Bachelor of Science in Animal Bioscience with Honors in Dairy Nutrition – Penn State University
Research & Clinical Interests:
Dr. McCrea’s professional focus centers on veterinary education and clinical practice with emphasis on animal welfare, food-animal production systems, food safety assurance, and reproductive physiology (theriogenology). Her diverse clinical background encompasses brood-mare management, equine ambulatory practice, small-animal practice, and mixed-animal ambulatory services, providing her with a holistic perspective she integrates into her teaching.
Clinical Experience:
She has served as attending veterinarian for equine steeplechase races and sled-dog competitions, experiences that further inform her teaching on animal welfare and performance medicine.
Personal Interests:
Outside of academia she enjoys dog appreciation activities, gardening, and hiking.
