Professor Joanne Lord is a health economist specializing in cost-effectiveness analysis and decision modelling at the University of Southampton. She directs the Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC), which provides clinical and economic evidence for NICE guidelines. Her research focuses on health technology assessment, with projects including newborn screening reviews, tuberculosis evaluations, and cardiovascular disease analyses. She leads NIHR-funded Technology Assessment Review (TAR) reports and collaborates on EU Horizon2020 projects like the FAIR trial for drug-resistant bacterial pneumonia.
Education & Career: Joanne holds degrees in economics, mathematics, and health economics. She has worked at the Department of Health, St George's Hospital Medical School, Imperial College, and Brunel University before joining the University of Southampton in 2015. She contributed to NICE’s early technology appraisals and clinical guidelines teams, aligning with her current work at SHTAC.
Research Projects: Active projects include SHTAC’s NIHR TAR reports, the FAIR trial, and collaborations on trials such as CONFIRM (mesothelioma therapy), OCTOPuS (cardiac surgery outcomes), and EACH-B (adolescent health interventions). She also oversees studies like WRAPPED, evaluating supermarket-based dietary strategies.
Labs/Teams: Leads SHTAC and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams across universities on projects involving health economics and clinical research. Her work integrates economic evaluations with clinical trials to inform healthcare policy and practice.
