Professor Joanna Story is a Professor of Early Medieval History at the University of Leicester's Department of History. She holds a BA in History and Archaeology (Durham, 1992) and a PhD in History (Durham, 1995), supported by a British Academy doctoral studentship. Her career includes roles as a temporary lectureship (1996), Senior Lecturer (2005), and promotion to full professor (2011). Her research focuses on early medieval manuscripts, inscriptions, art, and archaeological remains, particularly the Age of Charlemagne and mobility networks across Europe (Iceland to Baghdad before 1100CE). She conducts fieldwork in European archives and libraries, leveraging digitized primary sources.
Research interests emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to early medieval evidence, including stone sculpture, manuscript illuminations, and material culture. Her work examines cultural transmission through travel, migration, and intellectual exchange, with a focus on Carolingian-era networks. Recent scholarship explores Mercian Studies, Anglo-Saxon manuscript cultures, and the legacy of Charlemagne's empire.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary methodologies and global medieval connectivity, such as analyses of papal epitaphs, migration patterns, and manuscript circulation. While no specific named awards are listed, her doctoral funding from the British Academy underscores academic recognition. Teaching and supervision focus on early medieval history and cultural studies.
