Dr. Joanna Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Zoology and Senior Tutor at Bangor University's School of Environmental and Natural Sciences. With a research background in amphibian biology and biomechanics, she contributes to modules in Zoology, Biology, and Marine Zoology, including the specialized Zoology with Herpetology degree. Her work explores the relationship between morphological form and functional adaptation across diverse organisms.
- Teaching Expertise: Focus on large-class first-year instruction, module leadership (e.g., Organismal Diversity), and field courses in India and local regions.
- Research Focus: Amphibian biomechanics, conservation of hemiphractid frogs, and pedagogical strategies in zoology education.
Her recent publications address topics such as sexual dimorphism in megaherbivores, individual identification techniques in phyllomedusid frogs, and conservation status assessments. She has received significant recognition, including the Teaching Excellence Award (2008), David Searle Prize for Scientific Writing (2001), and the Education and Student Experience Award (2024).
