Nancy L. Staub, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biology at Gonzaga University and HHMI-Program Director at Gonzaga. Her research focuses on salamander evolutionary biology, particularly the evolution of sexual dimorphism and monomorphism in various clades, and the role of skin glands in pheromonal communication.
- Ph.D., Zoology - University of California at Berkeley
- B.A., Biology - Earlham College
Staub's research investigates: (1) evolutionary transitions between sexual dimorphism and monomorphism, (2) identification of pheromone-producing skin glands, and (3) histological techniques for tissue analysis. Her lab trains students in histology, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy. Recent publications (2021-2024) span evolutionary biology, endocrinology, and educational research, with a focus on plethodontid salamanders and hormonal communication.
Scientific recognition includes:
- 1997 Cover article in General and Comparative Endocrinology
She teaches undergraduate courses ranging from Introductory Biology to Advanced Evolutionary Biology, and her HHMI role indicates involvement in science education initiatives. Lab opportunities emphasize hands-on research for motivated students in amphibian evolutionary mechanisms, glandular morphology, and conservation biology.
