Joanna Smith

Joanna Smith is Professor of Nursing in Child Health with a joint appointment between Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. She co-leads the Child, Young Person and Family Research Group, focusing on interventions for children with long-term/life-limiting conditions.

With over 90 publications and 50 conference presentations, her research develops digital interventions supporting: 1) Family involvement in care decisions, and 2) Psychological/existential support for life-limiting conditions. She holds nursing registration in both adult and pediatric care and previously led NHS services for children with complex surgical needs.

Professor Smith's methodological expertise includes qualitative approaches and mixed methods. Current projects include developing dignity therapy digital applications and home-based asthma diagnosis strategies. She has secured funding from the National Institute for Health Research and maintains international collaborations in New Zealand and Denmark.
