Joanna Newman is an Associate Lecturer and Doctoral Researcher at Sheffield Hallam University's Sheffield Institute of Social Sciences, affiliated with the College of Social Sciences and Arts. She holds a BSc and MSc in Psychology. Her research focuses on intimate partner violence during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic, domestic violence prevention strategies, and reducing reoffending through evidence-based interventions. She collaborates with police on domestic abuse projects and evaluates Home Office and Ministry of Justice initiatives.
Teaching includes Psychology and Criminology courses such as Forensic Mental Health, Research Methods, and Offenders and Offending at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She supervises Criminology and Psychology dissertations at Level 6.
Her funded research includes N8 projects on domestic violence reporting methods and evaluations of violence reduction units. Current work involves a Ministry of Justice evaluation of reducing reoffending packages. She also conducts systematic reviews on risk factors for IPV during crises and has engaged in multi-phase interviews with lockdown-affected couples.
Research affiliations include the Centre for Behavioural Science and Applied Psychology and the Social and Economic Research Institute. Her work bridges behavioral science, criminology, and public policy to address societal challenges in mental health, criminal justice, and violence prevention.
