Professor Joanna Bridger is a leading researcher at Brunel University London, affiliated with the Department of Life Sciences within the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. She directs the Centre for Genome Engineering and Maintenance (cenGEM) and co-leads the B-STAR Space Research Network, integrating biomedical and aerospace research.
- HND BTEC Applied Biology (1985)
- BSc Microbiology and Genetics, UCL (1990)
- PhD in Zoology, University of Dundee (1994)
- PGCert in Learning & Teaching, Brunel (2002)
- MA Cult Film and TV, Brunel (2010)
Her research focuses on genome spatial organization, particularly how nuclear lamina, nucleoskeleton, and nuclear motors regulate genome functionality in health and disease. Key areas include:
- Chromatin dynamics in replicative senescence
- Molecular mechanisms of Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome
- Host-pathogen interactions with Schistosoma mansoni
- 3D genome organization in female cancers
- Space biology studying low-gravity genome effects
Recent publications highlight her work in nuclear envelope interactions, chromosomal translocations in cancer, and mTOR pathway interventions for aging disorders. She has contributed to over 107 publications and serves as editor for multiple journals.
Scientific Awards
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology
Teaching responsibilities include Cellular Pathologies, Gene Expression and Epigenetics, and Stem Cell Biology. Her outreach includes The Conversation media contributions and leadership in the B-STAR Network, connecting space research with biomedical applications.
