معرفی
Dr Joana Faria is a Lecturer at the Department of Biology, University of York, where she is establishing her research group. Her work focuses on genetic mechanisms of antigenic variation in African trypanosomes and gene expression control in divergent eukaryotes. Funded by a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship (a partnership between the Royal Society and Wellcome Trust), she received extensive institutional support during her application process and secured matched funding from the Department of Biology for future research needs. Recently, she transitioned to a permanent Lectureship, enabling her to supervise PhD students and apply for additional grants.
- PhD in Microbiology (2016): University of Porto (Portugal) and Institut Pasteur Korea (South Korea)
- Postdoctoral research: University of Dundee (genetic mechanisms of antigenic variation)
Her research intersects Microbiology, Genetics, and Parasitology, with broader implications for understanding gene regulation in complex eukaryotes. At York, she benefits from a collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art technologies and mentorship from senior academics.
Dr Faria received the Sir Henry Dale Fellowship, a prestigious award supporting early-career independence. The University of York provided matched funding and career development resources, including mock interviews and lab startup assistance. She now builds her lab while leveraging eligibility for further grants through her Lectureship.
