Joan Toohey Wesman is an Assistant Professor of Digital Media & Journalism and Chair of the Mass Communication Department at Principia College. She brings 25 years of professional radio production experience into her teaching and campus initiatives. Wesman advises the Radio Club, enabling students to host shows and broadcast sports events on Principia Internet Radio, and the TV Production Club, which produces YouTube videos. She also serves on the Speaker’s Committee to bring notable leaders to campus.
Educationally, she holds an MAT in English from Brown University and a BA from Hamilton College.
Her research focuses on convergence in mass communication, social media’s influence, and globalization’s impact on communication. She has contributed to the field as a producer for The Christian Science Monitor’s World Service and Fresh Air with Terry Gross (NPR), and trained South African journalists during the transition to democracy.
Wesman’s professional affiliations include the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.
