Joan Ockman is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design. Previously, she held a 20-year tenure at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and directed Columbia’s Temple Hoyne Buell Center (1994–2008). She has taught at Harvard, Yale, Cooper Union, Cornell, and the Berlage Institute. Her career began at the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, where she edited Oppositions journal and its book series.
Her research focuses on architectural history, theory, and education. Notable works include Architecture Culture 1943–1968 (1993), The Pragmatist Imagination (2001), and Architecture School (2012). Her writing explores modernism, urban theory, and pedagogical practices. She received the AIA Collaborative Achievement Award (2003) and became a SAH Fellow (2017).
Teaching includes courses like History and Theory II and Topics in Arch Theory: Four Urban Thinkers in New York. Her academic networks span institutions across the US and Europe, emphasizing interdisciplinary dialogue between practice, history, and theory.
