Joan Jahelka is a Lecturer in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) College of Education. She holds a BA (Cum Laude in History and English) from the University of Colorado Boulder and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from UCCS. Her career spans over three decades in education, including 10 years as Social Studies Facilitator and AVID District Director in Colorado Springs District 11, followed by national leadership as President of the National Social Studies Leaders Association.
Her expertise includes curriculum design, teacher training, and educational leadership, with a focus on History of the American West, AP Literature, and remedial reading strategies. She transitioned to UCCS after retiring from K-12 education, driven by a commitment to enhancing teaching practices and student success.
Dr. Jahelka’s professional contributions extend to advocating for equitable educational practices and supporting teacher development. She has actively engaged with organizations like Woodmen Valley 4-H, emphasizing mentorship beyond academia. Her personal interests include outdoor activities (fishing, skiing, cycling) and traditional music through fiddle-playing.
