Joachim Seemann is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms governing the function and inheritance of the mammalian Golgi apparatus during mitosis and cell division. He has held faculty positions since 2003, progressing from Assistant Professor (2003–2011) to his current rank. His educational background includes a PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from the Max-Planck-Institute (1993–1996) and a Diploma in Biology from the University of Stuttgart.
Research interests include Golgi biogenesis, mitotic spindle interactions, organelle partitioning, and membrane trafficking dynamics. His lab's work emphasizes how Golgi structure and function are regulated during cell division, with recent studies on RNA condensates, protein degradation pathways, and microtubule-Golgi interactions. Key findings include the role of GRASP proteins in Golgi stacking and the necessity of Golgi disassembly for proper spindle formation.
Publications highlight contributions to understanding Golgi matrix proteins, mitotic spindle regulation, and lipid transport mechanisms. His research bridges cell biology with structural biology, uncovering fundamental principles of organelle organization and inheritance. The Seemann Lab is located in Dallas, TX, contributing to UT Southwestern's broader medical research ecosystem.
