Paul Maddox is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, holding the William Burwell Harrison Scholar title. His lab focuses on understanding mechanisms of cell division, particularly chromosome segregation, spindle dynamics, and microtubule behavior during mitosis and meiosis. Research integrates advanced imaging techniques like confocal and super-resolution microscopy to study cellular processes in model organisms such as C. elegans and mammalian cells.
Key research interests include centromere structure, kinetochore function, and the regulation of mitotic exit. The lab develops innovative imaging technologies, exemplified by LITE microscopy, enhancing resolution and reducing phototoxicity. Maddox collaborates widely, mentoring over 20 graduate students and postdocs since 2010. His team has published extensively on topics like centromere maintenance, spindle assembly checkpoints, and aneuploidy mechanisms. Awards include the Harrison Scholar designation, recognizing contributions to biology and education.
Recent work explores how cell size and nuclear architecture influence mitotic timing, with applications to cancer biology and stem cell regulation. The lab actively trains students in interdisciplinary approaches, combining cell biology with genetics and biochemistry.
