Joachim Griesbaum

Professor Dr. Joachim Griesbaum serves as Professor and Managing Director of the Institute for Information Science & Language Technology at the University of Hildesheim, within the Faculty of Linguistics and Information Sciences (FB3). He holds multiple leadership positions including Executive Director of the Department for Information Science and Natural Language Processing, Vice-Dean, and Dean of Studies for the faculty.

His research focuses on information literacy, particularly examining how individuals access, evaluate, and use information in various contexts. His work spans digital information behavior, web information retrieval, e-learning technologies, and the societal implications of information access. Recent publications highlight his growing interest in AI literacy, rural information access, and the relationship between information competence and democratic participation.

Griesbaum's publication record shows a consistent trajectory of research in information science with evolving focus areas. Early work centered on web search technologies and information retrieval, while more recent publications address contemporary challenges including AI literacy, misinformation, rural information access, and the role of information competence in democratic processes. Professor Griesbaum leads research initiatives such as the DILRA project (Daseinsbezogene Informationskompetenz in ländlichen Räumen) which examines information competence in rural areas, and has contributed significantly to developing the Framework Informationskompetenz, a common standard for qualifications in library and information science programs in Germany.
