Joachim Frank is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and Biological Sciences at Columbia University. He received the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). His laboratory focuses on the mechanism of translation by the ribosome and other molecular machines using single-particle cryo-EM reconstruction methods.
Research interests include:
- Structural dynamics of protein biosynthesis
- Time-resolved cryo-EM with microfluidic chips
- Mapping energy landscapes of macromolecules
- Development of computational methods for cryo-EM analysis
His work spans structural biology, biophysics, and computational modeling, with recent applications to viral translation mechanisms and SARS-CoV-2 spike protein dynamics. Frank leads the development of cryoSpark and Relion software systems for 3D reconstruction.
Major awards include:
- Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2017)
- Franklin Medal in Life Science (2014)
- Membership in National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts & Sciences
