Prof. Joachim Curtius is a Professor of Experimental Atmospheric Research at Goethe University Frankfurt, serving as Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences and Geography since 2023. His research focuses on atmospheric aerosols, nucleation processes, trace gases, and climate impacts. He leads major projects like the DFG Special Priority Program SPP 1294 'HALO' and coordinates BMBF and EU initiatives (e.g., CLOUD-DOC, CLOUD-ITN). His work uses advanced techniques such as chemical ionization mass spectrometry and aircraft-based sampling.
- Education:
- PhD in Atmospheric Physics, Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (1996-1999)
- Physics Diploma, University of Heidelberg (1990-1996)
- Key Roles:
- Spokesperson of DFG SPP 1294 'HALO'
- Member of HALO Scientific Steering Committee
- Coordinator of multiple BMBF and EU projects
His research investigates aerosol formation in the upper troposphere, biogenic emissions, and iodine chemistry. Recent studies highlight particle formation from isoprene nitrates in the Amazon and the role of ammonia-sulfuric acid interactions in particle growth.
He has published over 150 papers, including high-impact studies in Nature and Science. Awards include the Otto-Hahn Medal (2000) and recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher (2018).
Grants/Labs: Leads CERN's CLOUD experiment and operates advanced field stations. Collaborates globally on atmospheric measurement techniques and climate modeling.
Labs/Teams: Heads the Aerosol and Trace Gases group at Goethe University, coordinating international teams for airborne campaigns (e.g., BLUESKY, CAFE).
