معرفی
Dean Venables is a Lecturer in Physical Chemistry at the School of Chemistry, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. He leads the Venables group, focusing on atmospheric chemistry, air quality, and instrument development. His research involves field studies, chamber experiments, and instrument design to measure trace gases and aerosols. Venables has participated in campaigns across multiple countries and secured funding from agencies like Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), the EPA, and EU programs (FP7, H2020). His work has been cited over 2,300 times (Google Scholar, 2023).
Education
- BSc, MSc (Rhodes University, South Africa)
- PhD (Yale University, USA, 2001)
Research Interests
His research emphasizes developing spectroscopic methods to detect trace gases such as NO₃ radicals, halogen oxides (BrO, IO), and iodine emissions from seaweeds. He also investigates mercury speciation and optical properties of aerosols. Key projects include coastal iodine emissions, mercury oxidation mechanisms, and aerosol light scattering.
Grants & Collaborations
- Funded by SFI, EPA, EU Horizon 2020
- Collaborations with institutions in China, Germany, Japan, and the USA
- Editor of Applications of Spectroscopy in Environmental Monitoring of Gases and Aerosols (Elsevier, 2021)
Labs & Teams
He leads the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC) at UCC and is affiliated with the Atmospheric Monitoring Station and the Irish Atmospheric Simulation Chamber Facility (IASC).
