Prof. Andy Ruth is a Professor in Physics at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, and leads the Laser Spectroscopy Group within the Department of Physics. He is also the Director of the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry (CRAC) and a member of the Environmental Research Institute. His research focuses on laser spectroscopy, atmospheric chemistry, and photophysics, with applications in trace gas detection, aerosol monitoring, and material science.
Ruth's academic journey includes a PhD from the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (1992) and a Habilitation (DSc) from TU Berlin (2001). His work spans experimental techniques like cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), and Raman lidar. He has pioneered incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS) for detecting atmospheric species such as NO₂, I₂, and HONO. Key contributions include studies on volcanic ash distribution (Eyjafjallajökull 2010) and iodine emission from marine macroalgae. Ruth has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and led projects like the TRACES initiative. His research groups collaborate internationally, advancing environmental and atmospheric science through innovative spectroscopic methods.
