Dr Jo Brown serves as an Honorary Fellow at the School of Law, University of Edinburgh, and holds clinical leadership as Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Clinical Director at the Orchard Clinic Medium Secure Inpatient Unit, Royal Edinburgh Hospital, where she leads the Women’s Service.
Education
- MBBS from University of Newcastle
- Intercalated MA in History of Medicine (dissertation on prisoners as experimental subjects in the USA)
- BA in Criminology and Psychology from Open University
- Qualified Cognitive-Analytic Therapist
Research Interests
Her scholarly focus bridges Forensic Psychiatry, Mental Health Law, Criminology, Psychology, History of Medicine, and Cognitive Analytic Therapy, examining legal-mental health intersections in forensic contexts. Current work emphasizes policy development through Scottish Government collaborations including the Scott Review of Mental Health Law and Barron Review of Forensic Mental Health Services.
Professional Leadership
As Chair (2021-2025) of the Forensic Faculty for the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland, she spearheads responses to national mental health legislation reforms and clinical service frameworks.
