Jo Anne Stratton serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University, affiliated with The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital), a leading bilingual academic healthcare institution and McGill research institute. She joined The Neuro in 2019, bringing her expertise in neuroimmunology and nerve cell regeneration to advance understanding of multiple sclerosis and related neurodegenerative disorders.
Her educational journey began with undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne, where she participated in a specialized research-based intensive program that ignited her passion for neuroscience. This foundation propelled her into a career dedicated to unraveling the complexities of the immune system's interaction with brain cells in diseases like multiple sclerosis.
Stratton's research program is centered on deciphering the mechanisms driving neurodegeneration in advanced multiple sclerosis, particularly focusing on the brain's circulatory system and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) dynamics. She investigates how defects in CSF circulation contribute to disease progression and the role of understudied ependymal cells lining the brain's ventricles. Her work aims to identify novel therapeutic targets beyond current anti-inflammatory treatments to halt disease progression.
Motivated by her father's personal battle with multiple sclerosis, which left him wheelchair-bound during her undergraduate years, Stratton combines deep scientific inquiry with a personal commitment to improving patient outcomes. Outside her academic pursuits, she co-authors children's books with her husband that inspire resilience in the face of disability, drawing from her father's real-life experiences.
