João Tedim is an Associate Professor at the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering (DEMaC) at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He leads the SECOP group within CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials. His research focuses on corrosion protection, nanomaterials, and smart coatings for industrial and biomedical applications. He coordinates and participates in over 30 national and international projects, including EU H2020 initiatives like COAT4LIFE and SMARTAQUA.
Tedim holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Leicester (2008) and has extensive postdoctoral experience. He teaches Materials Science and Engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including roles as Director of the MSc in Materials and Biomedical Devices (2019–2022) and coordinator of multiple university courses.
His research interests include: development of nanocontainers for controlled release of corrosion inhibitors; synthesis and computational modeling of materials for corrosion, electrocatalysis, and water remediation; and multifunctional coatings for aeronautical and maritime industries. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles (h-index 34, 4300+ citations) and holds multiple patents in corrosion protection technologies.
Scientific awards include the FEMS Communication Award (2020), Carl Wagner Medal (2017), and Young Researcher Prize (2013). Current projects emphasize eco-friendly coatings, corrosion sensing, and circular economy solutions. His lab explores synergies between nanotechnology, electrochemistry, and sustainable materials.
