Jiyeon Kang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Iowa's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her work focuses on digital media, global higher education, and East Asian studies, particularly examining how marginalized groups navigate and reshape dominant discourses. She holds a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Her research explores topics like youth-driven activism in South Korea, intercultural coexistence in global education systems, and the ethical frameworks for shared spaces. She has authored Igniting the Internet: Youth and Activism in Postauthoritarian South Korea (2016) and is currently working on a book about Chinese students' experiences in U.S. and South Korean universities.
Key awards include the Top Four Paper Award from the National Communication Association's Ethnography Division (2010). Her work bridges communication theory with sociopolitical analysis, emphasizing the lived experiences of marginalized populations in digital and educational spaces.
