Dr. Jisun Kim is a Lecturer in Mechanical, Biomedical & Design Engineering at Aston University's School of Engineering and Technology, part of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. She holds a PhD in Design Research from Brunel University (2013–2018), an MA in Design Management from the University of Leeds (2011–2012), and a BA in Industrial Design. Her research focuses on autonomous vehicles, mobility as a service (MaaS), human-machine interfaces (HMI), and user experience (UX) design. She explores how technology interacts with human behavior in transportation systems, emphasizing accessibility, trust, and safety.
Key research areas include:
- Autonomous vehicle trust mechanisms and user experience
- MaaS interface design for inclusive populations
- Human factors in semi-automated driving systems
- Visual communication for automated vehicle systems
Dr. Kim has conducted on-road studies comparing automated and manual driving workloads, developed heuristic tools for MaaS applications, and analyzed passenger behavior change through data-driven approaches. Her work bridges engineering, design, and social sciences to create safer, more user-centered mobility solutions.
She has held visiting researcher positions at the University of Southampton (2022–present) and collaborated internationally on projects like the C-NAV trust control algorithms for autonomous vehicles. Her research outputs span 34 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing applied human-centered design in transportation systems.
