Jim Thomson is a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry at the University of Oxford, affiliated with St Catherine’s College and New College. He serves as Deputy Director of Studies (2023–present) and introduced a standardized tutorial program for Organic Chemistry, alongside termly departmental collections.
- MChem (2003) and DPhil (2007) in Chemistry, University of Oxford
- Junior Research Fellowship, St Catherine’s College (post-2007)
- Postdoctoral Research Associate, Senior Research Fellow, and Tutor for Admissions at St Catherine’s College
Jim’s research focuses on synthetic organic chemistry, particularly asymmetric transformations and natural product synthesis. His work bridges fundamental organocatalysis, developed during his PhD under Professor Steve Davies, with applications in pharmaceutical and chemical sciences.
He teaches foundational and advanced Organic Chemistry modules across three years of the Oxford MChem course, including Problem Solving in Organic Chemistry (Year 1), Radical Reactions (Year 3), and Aromatic & Heterocyclic Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He also supervises fourth-year Part II research projects in synthetic organic chemistry.
Scientific honors:
- Fellowship by Special Election, St Catherine’s College (2010)
