Jim Shulman serves as Interim Dean of the Labry School of Science, Technology, and Business and holds the rank of Assistant Professor at Cumberland University. He teaches political science within the Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education and the Arts. Shulman earned a B.A. and J.D. from Vanderbilt University. His career spans over 40 years in Middle Tennessee, including roles as legal counsel for the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration, chief of staff to Speaker Jimmy Naifeh, and executive director of the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability. He served on the Metropolitan Nashville Council (25th District and At-large) from 1999–2023, chairing Budget, Transportation, and Public Works Committees, emphasizing fiscal accountability and emergency preparedness. Before joining academia, he was Nashville's 9th Vice Mayor (2018–2023).
