Jim Macnamara

Jim Macnamara is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Communication at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) since 2016. He holds dual roles as an academic and researcher, specializing in evaluation of public communication, organizational listening, and strategic communication. His career spans over 30 years in professional communication practice, including roles as CEO of CARMA International and Group Research Director at iSentia.

Macnamara’s research focuses on measuring the effectiveness of public communication by governments, corporations, and NGOs, with notable projects including evaluations for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global health campaigns and advisory roles for institutions like the UK Government Communication Service and the European Commission’s DG COMM. He has authored 18 books, including *Beyond Post-Communication* (2020) and *Evaluating Public Communication* (2018), and over 100 peer-reviewed articles.

His expertise includes organizational listening, media literacy, and addressing disinformation in the digital age. He is a Fellow of the International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication (AMEC), Chair of AMEC’s Academic Advisory Group, and recipient of prestigious awards like the Don Bartholomew Award (2017) and Pathfinder Award (2017). He has also held leadership positions at UTS, including Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science (2019–2023) and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (2010–2014).
