Jim Doti is Professor and President Emeritus at Chapman University, holding the Rick Muth Family Chair in Economics within the George L. Argyros College of Business and Economics. After serving as Chapman University's president for 25 years from 1991 to 2016, he returned to the faculty where he continues active research and teaching.
Doti earned his BS in economics from the University of Illinois, Chicago, and his MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. In 1974, he joined the Chapman faculty and founded the A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research in 1978, which pioneered the first urban econometric model-based economic forecast in the United States. His economic forecasting work has gained national recognition, with Chapman's real GDP forecasts outperforming all 30 agencies in the Blue Chip Economic Indicators surveys between 2004-2014.
Doti's research spans econometric analysis of urban areas, economics of higher education, and more recently, socioeconomic factors in public health crises. His scholarly work appears in academic journals and major publications including The Wall Street Journal, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Orange County Register, and Orange County Business Journal. He has co-authored econometrics textbooks and children's books.
His recent publications (2020-2024) focus heavily on analyzing the socioeconomic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, including vaccination effects, policy interventions, and mortality rates across U.S. states. These works demonstrate his methodological expertise in econometric modeling applied to contemporary public health challenges.
