Jim Correll is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology at the University of Arkansas. His roles include serving as Director of the Experiment Station (DREX) and leading research on plant pathogens. He holds a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, and M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in Plant Pathology.
His research focuses on fungal and oomycete pathogens, particularly in vegetable crops and rice. He employs molecular and genetic tools to study pathogen diversity, virulence evolution, and host resistance. Key areas include Colletotrichum, Fusarium, and Verticillium species, as well as diseases like downy mildew and rice blast. His work integrates applied and basic research, emphasizing integrated disease management strategies.
Correll has conducted international collaborations in over 20 countries, addressing crop diseases and pathogen biology. He has received numerous awards, including the John White Outstanding Research Award and election as an APS Fellow. His contributions span teaching, mentoring, and advising graduate students, with notable recognitions for his mentorship.
He has authored over 90 publications, focusing on pathogen genetics, molecular markers, and disease resistance. His research also includes projects funded by organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, targeting durable rice blast resistance through genomic analysis.
