Jill Stevenson is a Professor of Theatre Arts and Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts at Marymount Manhattan College, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. She holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and a B.S. from Valparaiso University. Her academic leadership includes serving as President of the Faculty Council (2015–2019) and co-chairing the College’s Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

Jill’s research focuses on the intersections of performance, religion, temporality, and embodiment. Her work spans medieval devotional theatre and contemporary evangelical performance, exploring how ritual and drama shape experiences of time, faith, and identity. She is particularly known for her scholarship on Passion Plays, Last Judgment performances, and the spatial politics of domestic life in theatre.
Her recent publications include books such as Feeling the Future at Christian End Time Performances (2022) and Sensational Devotion (2013), as well as edited volumes on medieval visual culture and dream homes in performance. Her articles examine affect, medievalism, and religious embodiment across journals like Theatre Journal, TDR, and Speculum. Collectively, her work reveals a sustained engagement with how performance constructs sacred meaning across historical periods.

Jill supervises student dramaturgs and leads the Theatre History & Performance Texts concentration. She has taught a wide range of courses including Theatre Histories, Japanese Theatre, and Medieval Performance, and leads the study abroad course on Performance and Culture of Ancient Greece. She also teaches innovative general education courses such as Medieval New York and The Ethics of Performance Reenactment.
She has presented her research at institutions like NYU, the University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University, and participated in events at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club and the Museum of the Bible. Her editorial work includes co-editing special issues and anthologies on medieval drama and visual culture.
