Jie Chen is a Professor of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the School of Molecular & Cellular Biology. His research focuses on signal transduction mechanisms underlying cellular and developmental processes, particularly in mTOR signaling, skeletal muscle regeneration, and lipid-protein interactions. He holds a B.S. from Peking University, a Ph.D. from Rice University, and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard University.
Key research areas include the mTOR signaling network, skeletal muscle repair, and the role of lipids in cellular regulation. His work employs molecular, biochemical, and genetic approaches, including mouse models and single-molecule techniques. Notable achievements include uncovering regulators of mTOR pathways and their implications for diabetes, cancer, and muscular dystrophy.
Chen has received multiple awards, such as the 2021 Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award and the American Cancer Society Research Scholar (2003–2007). He collaborates with institutions like the Cancer Center at Illinois and the Institute for Genomic Biology. His lab investigates therapeutic strategies for muscle disorders and aging-related metabolic issues.
