Jialong Li

Dr Jialong Li is a Senior Lecturer at the Newcastle Business School (Department of Accounting and Finance), part of the College of Human and Social Futures at the University of Newcastle. He joined in early 2019, following a tenure as Assistant Professor at Hunan University, China, and holds a PhD from the University of Manitoba (2017). His key research focuses on corporate governance within family businesses and small enterprises, new venture financing, corporate social responsibility, and not-for-profit finance risks. He collaborates internationally with scholars from Australia, the US, UK, Canada and China.

Dr Li has earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Manitoba (Canada) and a Master of Science from Simon Fraser University. His work frequently examines financing mechanisms, regulatory environments, and the interplay between governance structures and firm performance across different contexts.

Research Interests:
His primary areas of expertise include analyzing corporate governance challenges in family-owned SMEs, evaluating the effectiveness of government subsidies for tech ventures, and investigating how CEO compensation structures influence risk management in mergers and acquisitions. He also explores the nuanced relationship between CSR initiatives and systemic financial risks, as well as the impact of political affiliations on earnings manipulation practices in privately held firms. Recent work has highlighted the strategic financing choices of family vs non-family firms and the moderating role of board experience in internationalization decisions.

Grants & Funding:
He secured a $6,000 research grant from the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand in 2023 to study 'Inside Debt and Broad Framing of Risky Decisions: Evidence from Geographic Diversification in Serial Acquisition', focusing on how debt holdings influence corporate risk perceptions.
