Jiahuai Hu is an Associate Professor and Associate Specialist in Plant Pathology Extension at the University of Arizona's School of Plant Sciences, part of the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences. His work focuses on plant disease diagnostics, epidemiology of phytopathogens, and disease management strategies. He collaborates with the National Plant Diagnostic Network (NPDN) and state/federal agencies to address agricultural challenges.
Dr. Hu holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Virginia Tech (2010), an M.S. from China Agricultural University (2005), and a B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Hefei Institute of Economics and Technology (2000). His research emphasizes fungal, bacterial, nematode, and viral pathogens affecting crops and ornamentals, with a focus on developing diagnostic tools and sustainable management practices.
Key research areas include first reports of emerging pathogens (e.g., Valsa melanodiscus on alder, Fomitopsis meliae on citrus), fungal-bacterial-nematode interactions, and crop-specific diseases like cotton root rot and grapevine red blotch virus. His diagnostic services support growers, Extension agents, and landscape professionals across Arizona and beyond.
Publications highlight pathogen distribution mapping, nematicide efficacy analysis, and development of selective media for pathogen detection. Collaborative efforts extend to arid agriculture challenges, bioenergy crops (guayule), and emerging issues in industrial hemp cultivation.
