Jiabao Li is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin in the School of Design & Creative Technologies. Her research and creative practice spans the intersection of art, design, technology, and biology. She directs a lab that explores interspecies co-creation, human-computer interaction, and sustainable futures through innovative mediums including wearables, robotics, AR/VR, and bioart.
Her research interests focus on climate change, humane technology, and interspecies world sharing. Li creates works that address a just, sustainable future through mediums including wearable technology, robotics, AR/VR, projection, performance, software, and installation. Her research spans from interspecies co-creation to knowledge graphs, from human-computer interaction to menstrual blood proteomes. She investigates how technology mediates our perception of reality, as demonstrated in her TED Talk and TransVision project.
Her recent projects reveal trends in eco-art, bio-design, and critical technology studies. A Taste of the Anthropocene (2022) uses culinary experiences to communicate Earth's history, while Menstrual Garden (2021) combines scientific investigation with olfactory installation. Her work increasingly integrates climate data visualization with artistic expression, as seen in Once a Glacier and Glacier's Lament, creating immersive experiences that make climate change tangible.
She has received numerous prestigious awards including:
- Forbes China 30 Under 30
- iF Design Award
- Falling Walls
- NEA
- STARTS Prize
- Fast Company Innovation by Design
- Core77 Design Awards
- IDSA International Design Excellence Awards
- A' Design Award
- Webby Award
Li has served on juries for major design awards including IDSA, D&AD, Biodesign Challenge, and SIGGRAPH. She co-founded Endless Health as Chief Product Officer and previously co-founded Snapi Health. Her four years at Apple involved inventing and exploring new technologies for future products, including the Apple Vision Pro. She is a member of NEW INC Creative Science at the New Museum and ONX Studio. Her work has been exhibited internationally at MoMA, Venice Architecture Biennale, Ars Electronica, and other major venues.
Li leads the Ecocentric Future Lab, which probes into non-human intelligence and shifts perspectives through co-creation. The lab produces works that challenge anthropocentrism and explore interspecies relationships through technological mediation. Current projects include developing systems for wildlife priority in urban environments and creating culinary experiences that communicate deep time geological processes.
