Jia Yan is a Professor of Economics at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the School of Economic Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Irvine, and previously taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Faculty of Business before joining WSU in 2007. His expertise spans Transportation Economics, Applied Microeconomics, and Applied Econometrics, with a focus on policy analysis, market competition, and infrastructure efficiency.
Yan’s research addresses critical issues such as airline mergers, airport capacity management, and the impact of digital platforms like Uber. He has published in top journals including Econometrica, Journal of Econometrics, and Transportation Research. His work has earned accolades, including the Transport and Public Utility Group Dissertation Award (2003), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Research Excellence Award (2006), and multiple best paper awards (2009, 2011).
His studies often combine empirical rigor with policy relevance, such as analyzing flight delay propagation in China, measuring ride-hailing benefits in urban areas, and assessing the effects of open skies agreements on international passenger flows. He has also explored the economic implications of snowfall on airport operations and the spatial patterns of airline networks like Southwest Airlines.
Yan serves on the editorial board of Transportmetrica and contributes to debates on regulatory frameworks, infrastructure investment, and market competition. His work frequently bridges theoretical models with real-world applications, ensuring practical insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders.
